The basics

What does your credit score mean for buying a home?

It helps shape your options.

Credit can affect mortgage eligibility and pricing. Loan requirements vary by program and lender, so one number cannot tell you every option available.

It’s part of a bigger picture.

A lender also considers your income, debts, savings and other application details. Your homebuying plan should include a monthly payment you feel comfortable with.

Start here

Three useful steps before you apply.

01 / REVIEW

Look at your credit reports.

Review the accounts and payment information for accuracy. You can request free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Reports and scores are different; a free report may not include a score.

02 / CHECK

Question information that looks wrong.

Dispute inaccurate information with the credit reporting company and the business that supplied it. Keep copies of what you send and the responses you receive.

03 / PREPARE

Ask before making big credit changes.

Keep payments on time and discuss planned new accounts, financed purchases or account closures with a lender before applying. There is no guaranteed quick fix or promised score increase.

Common questions

A little clarity goes a long way.

What credit score do I need to buy a home?

There is no single minimum that applies to every mortgage. The loan program, lender and your full application matter. A licensed lender can evaluate your situation and explain current requirements.

Why might my lender’s score differ from the one in my app?

Different scoring models, reporting companies and calculation dates can produce different scores. An app’s score is useful context, but it may not be the score used for your mortgage application.

Will checking my own credit lower my score?

Checking your own credit reports or scores does not lower your credit scores. A lender’s credit inquiry is different. Ask the lender what type of credit check they will perform before you authorize it.

Do I need to be ready to buy before we meet?

No. We can discuss your timeline, the buying process and the questions to bring to a lender—even if buying is further down the road.
